I went as part of the University YMCA team from SMU. We were there to initiate a road building project in a bid to bring to commerce into this rather big but poor village. At the same time, we were there to enrich ourselves by interacting with the local youths at the Boys Brigade Learning Centre where we tought English and conducted some fun activities (like bhangra!!!)
We spent 9 days in the village and 3 days touring Phnom Penh and Siem Reap
I did not bring a camera along so im waiting till the 25th of this month when i will received 2 dvds worth of shots that the rest of the team took. But for now, here are some photos from a friends site.

Angkor Tomb
Meal time - We had every village meal here. This house is owned by a lady named Sofia. Her daughters name is Vichny and she attends english classes at the learning centre. Her house was taken over by the Khmer Rouge during their regime and it was used as Khmer Rouge hq for that province. The bloodstains and bullet holes on the walls are still there.
This has been a very generic post. I promise i will provide more details when i have the full set of pictures :)

One day a father of a very wealthy family took his son on a
trip to the country with the firm purpose of showing his son how
poor people can be.
They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would
be considered a very poor family. On their return from their
trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?"
"It was great, Dad."
"Did you see how poor people can be?" the father asked.
"Oh Yeah" said the son.
"So what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father proudly.
The son answered:
I saw that we have one dog and they had four.
We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden
and they have a creek that has no end.
We have imported lanterns in our garden
and they have the stars at night.
Our patio reaches to the front yard
and they have the whole horizon.
We have a small piece of land to live on
and they have fields that go beyond our sight.
We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.
We buy our food, but they grow theirs.
We have walls around our property to protect us,
they have friends to protect them."
With this the boy's father was speechless.
Then his son added,
"Thanks, Dad, for showing me how poor we are."
Too many times we forget what we have
and concentrate on what we don't have.
What is one person's worthless object,
is another's prized possession.
It is all based on one's perspective.
Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for all
the bounty we have instead of worrying about wanting more.

Ann and Nida, i hope you do not mind me sharing this...
people are like boats, each traveling with their baggage, trying to stay afloat, yearning for some other boat to come along to keep them company and share their load, but ultimately they end up travelling alone.
Everybody sails alone, but we can travel side by side.
Perhaps no one can share the burden, and no one truly travels in your boat with you to make things easier.
but no one said we couldn't move in the same direction now did they? =)

So school is officially over now. Just got to get by with exams before i set off on a 4 month break. I have one week to study.
Its up to me to make it work. I can pull my grades up from a poor midterm, but right now, im struggling to find that drive. Honestly, i need to be on overdrive. Get your ass working boy!
Yesterday was my last comms class. It was the second round of individual presentations and some dudes gave very moving stories. I've got a hold of some of the stories and will be sharing them soon :)
Anyway this is a picture of my comms group that i worked with 6 weeks ago.

One year on and you are still in our hearts
We were the best of buds in camp but i used to wonder if we would still remain friends once we left Orion. One year on, i know we are still friends. I know you are still looking with that great big smile on your face. Who can forget that smile? The only smile that brings light to the darkest of nights out in the jungle.
You the man Ridhuan. I miss you bro. Dude, we were together all the time as we worked to make our men the best. They were the best. You inspired them and you kept me going too. I think about you alot nowdays. I think its cos i wish i have a Ridhuan in my life now too, someone to keep keep me going, to make things all the better, just like you did with that great big smile of yours.

As i might have mentioned before, my corporate communications professor has tasked us to:
- Present a 4-6 minute speech with the intention of motivating fellow colleagues in your company.
- It is up to me to decide what i would like to motivate them to do
- I must incorporate a story (any related story) in my speech that will increase the impact and effectiveness of my main point
- The desired response from the class is , 'Wow'.
I'm really not sure what i want my main point to be. Similarly, i do not have any stories in mind. If you have either, ill really love to hear it.
P.S: Thanks Prabhu for your previous comment. :)

This is something i adapted from a friends blog. Thanks Di!
Don't get angry unnecessarily. Patience pays
Do things out of the purity of your heart. Always.
Safe guard that heart and of those around you.
School has been really tiring, but at the same time really interesting. My fav. module this term has got to be comms. Tom Estad is extremely fascinating and the classes are damn enriching. I need some help though:
In two weeks i have to assume i am a member of a corporate office. I have to present an individual speech of 6 minutes long with the aim of inspiring those around me. Inspire them to do what, is up to me, but to inspire them, must make use of a story at the start of the presentation before hitting my point.
So i still do not know what my point is going to be, and neither do i know what story i can use.
Sociology.
Its really fascinating but alot of it seems to be like an explanation of common sense. The academics just seem to explain common sense in a fascinating way heheh. For the entire week I've been stuck on my research paper. I cannot seem to come up with an argument that can resurrect my socio grades. I got a C for my last socio grading and so i need to raise that by at least a grade.
Internal Conflict
On Tuesday i talked with a couple of my seniors. They were talking about going for a movie and some shopping after class that day. Honestly, that's pretty unheard off in SMU. But they claimed that they are not motivated by GPA and their only interest is to come out with a degree. A part of me wishes to be like them and break the chains of slavery to the GPA. But where will that lead me. Are Singaporean employers truly concerned by your academic performance or are they interested in your holistic experience? Right now, the main factor to motivating me to support my GPA is so my desire to qualify for a good grad school to do Sport Psych.

That quote hit me strongly as I was reading my Business Communications textbook. I need a little sweetener.
2 weeks have passed of this term and honestly, I have not been up to the mark. I cannot feel that same drive I felt last semester. But its ok, after this weekend social science retreat, I will force the drive upon myself. Back come the long hours in the library, with wonderful breaks at fruijch ofcourse.
On Monday i will make sure I get all the books I need and start whacking!
Its gonna be a great team with lots to learn
Understanding Societies
Research Methods in Social Science
globalization of World Politics
Leadership and team building
Business Communications
